James is totally correct - CEP involves event filtering / pattern identification leading to decisions / reactions: filter events, identify patterns to create complex events, use these to make decisions, and react to those decisions. However, some CEP applications output events to just a dashboard, external BPM, decision services, etc. Some CEP tools are also quite immature re "decision management" versus many (synchronous event oriented) BRMS offerings.

I recommend the twitterers check out the EPTS CEP Glossary for further guidance. Or join the EPTS Symposium in 2 weeks for an update on use cases, terminology and architectures.

Disclaimer: TIBCO's CEP product is one of the few that includes a decision management component providing a separate BRMS-type feature.

Cheers!
