Infosys and others are using our Modernization Workbench with Business Rule Manager (tools by Relativity - recently purchased by Microfocus) to conduct Business Rule Discovery.

In our hybrid approach, business processes are discovered and documented. Then, rules are automatically generated based upon data impacts to low-level outputs, or based upon pattern-matching techniques using our querying tool.
The initial output can be "noisy", but with the help of business naming, filtering and retrofitting capabilities, a complete set of current-behavior processes and rules is created. Subject matter experts review and refine the content before it is output to either BRMS or functional specification tools.

In our experience, automation in rule discovery yields 50% - 75% efficiency compared to manual rule mining, not to speak of higher quality and consistency in the results.
